I recently had a student ask me how to start a mediation practice. Each time she tried to mediate, she couldn’t empty in their mind or sit for more than a minute. Too many thoughts jumbling around.
It took me back to when I started my meditation practice many years ago when I had the same expectation – clearing the mind. How are we supposed to empty all of our thoughts to connect? The answer is – we can’t most of the time.
I’ve found the best way to start a practice is to find one thing to focus on – your breath, an image, a mantra, a sound. When our thoughts start to wander, acknowledge them and then come back to your focus. At first, this may only be for a couple of minutes. Before you know it, your practice may be 5 minutes, 10 minutes, or even 30 minutes. As you continue, you will discover what works best to help you connect with your inner most self. It doesn’t matter how long you meditate or what focus you use, this is your time to connect with you.
